Thinking of storing your vehicle? Whether you need more spacing in your garage, you’re taking a long trip or you just won’t be using it for a long time, self Storage is a smart choice for you. When you’re ready to store your vehicle, follow this quick checklist when considering self storage facilities:
Choose the right self storage option – For short term storage, storing a vehicle outside in self storage under a tarp is likely just fine. For long term storage you may want to consider indoor storage that offers a paved space. It really depends on how much protection you want from the elements.
Climate controlled storage is available – For vehicles like collector cars, your best bet is paying the extra cost for indoor, secured, climate-controlled space. This offers the most protection from the elements and the highest security for your vehicle.
Verify the dimensions – Before settling on an indoor storage space, consider the dimensions, including the dimensions of the door. Also keep in mind any other items you’ll want to store with your vehicle like a trailer or additional equipment & supplies. You want enough room to move around the vehicle, as well as a space to maneuver when taking the vehicle into and out of storage. These should also be considered for open, covered spaces with specific lot size.
Vehicle use – When choosing self storage consider how often you’ll be using your vehicle. If you expect to use it frequently, such as an RV during a specific season, then try to get a unit that is near the entrance. This way you can come and go without having to maneuver through the entire facility.
Getting paperwork ready – Self storage facilities typically require that plates, tags and registration are current. They may also require proof of insurance since individual property is not covered by the facility’s insurance provider.
Prep the vehicle – Check and inflate your tires, change and top off all the fluids and make sure the vehicle runs before placing it in storage.
Protect the interior – Even if you’re using temperature controlled storage space for your vehicle, place some silica inside. The silica will absorb moisture and prevent damage to the interior while inhibiting mold and mildew growth.
Maintenance checklist – Go through a bumper to bumper maintenance checklist or have your mechanic service your vehicle before placing it in self storage. This will ensure that when you need the vehicle or you’re ready to remove it, it will start and run properly.
